The Zambia Institute of Public Relations and Communication (ZIPRC) has applauded government for signing the Statutory Instrument No 35 of 2024 for the operationalizing of the Access to Information Bill.
ZIPRC Registrar & Chief Executive Officer Nimon Simukanga Muleya says this landmark decision marks a significant step towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement in the nation.
Mr Muleya says the ATI law mandates public institutions to provide access to information held by the government, thereby fostering a culture of transparency and making information readily available to citizens to hold public officials accountable for their actions, leading to improved governance and reduced corruption.
”The law underpins democratic values by promoting openness and participation. Citizens can engage more effectively with their leaders and institutions, ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights protected,” Said Mr Muleya.
Mr. Muleya further stated that ZIPRC stands ready to support the implementation of the ATI law and to collaborate with all stakeholders in promoting its benefits.
